"At the turn of the new century Bill came to me for mandolin lessons as a novice with unusually good rhythmic instincts. I built on this strength, teaching him technique and theory via a varied repertoire, including blues, Scottish reels, bluegrass, old-time fiddle tunes, ragtime, and whatever else I thought he needed. He absorbed it all, became a good player as expected, and then surprised everyone by creating excellent new tunes and songs that reflected all these influences.  Listeners want to hear them and musicians want to play them.  This was surely the case with the fabulous San Francisco Bay Area musicians who were as happy to play on this album as we were to have them in the studio, and as I have been to produce this recording.”
